Balzac, James, and the Realistic Novel. Balzac himself was extremely proud of the work, declaring even before the final installment was published: Bbalzac just couldn’t finish this. I just feel like telling Balzac “Oh would you get to the poi I read this book since it’s one of the classics I felt I had to read in my lifetime.
I then tried to read it in English translation, but with the same result, and opted out.
Balzac’s work reminds me of The Iceman Cometh, where the characters start from nowhere, proceed through doing nothing, and end up where they started, having accomplished nothing at all. Paris offers him a chance to abandon his far-away family and remake himself in the city’s ruthless image.
God, this was torture. Ich mag es einfach nicht.
I can only put it down to having read this in translation, but I gorilt the characters both unreal and uninteresting, the plot muddled, uneven and unlikely, and the writing uninspiring to the point of being somnifacient. Too many wordy descriptions what the buildings looked like,etc.
He failed in all of these efforts. Alicia Definitely Pere Goriot.
Can’t say much more about it because most of it disappeared from my memory, apart from that bad impress Yoriot guess I’m not good with classics, because apparently most people liked it a lot while I hated it.
