I just felt like I could see through Grass’s writing, and it felt like he wasn’t actually a great writer, he just had the ability to focus on some meaningless object gunte event and use grasx thesaurus to describe it circularly. Grass was raised a Catholic. This book is not bad but still it did not do anything for me.

Though the details in the books are at times tiresome and alien, particularly when a reader is not aware that the author is talking about a town that German occupied during the war and currently is in Poland; but they are authentic and deserve the attention of the people who are interested in the authors like Gunter Grass.

There is very little of the literature available in English, by a German author, which tried to deal with the genesis of the rise of Nazism and the consequent world war.

Maybe because I knew the end was in sight? And yet, I simply found it mostly boring.

I know, pretty much everybody and their dog sees Grass as a literary genius whose books are masterpieces – but he just bores me to death. Then we have his mother Agnes who married a grocer, obviously, Alfred Matzerath, who loves to cook and is a member of dd Nazi party. Grass was raised a Catholic. He married in and since lived in Berlin as well as part-time in Schleswig-Holstein. InGrass caused controversy with his guntr of his Waffen-SS service gnter the final months of World War II, which he had kept a secret until publishing his memoir that year.
